Actually Do the Things You’ve Been Meaning To
Maybe you’ve been meaning to “get around” to that project, workout, lose weight, grow your business, take a dream trip, meet new people, save money, and more. But…
You’re not progressing at the rate you’d like. Or you’re making sporadic progress. Perhaps you’ve progressed in one area of your life only to have other parts of your life suffer. Or even worse, you stalled out or have never started the things you’ve always wanted to do.
Telling yourself that you just need to “get it together” or “just do it” doesn’t work anymore. But why?
You’re not failing to make progress because you don’t have time or lack willpower. A lack of consistent action is NOT because you’re lazy or not trying hard enough.
The truth about why you’re not making the progress you want is way bigger than a lack of time or discipline…
Our modern lives set us up to fail
World problems, petty grievances, life’s responsibilities, and the pressure to fulfill other people’s expectations and needs cloud our vision.
Modern media hijacks our attention and stokes our outrage and fear.
Even friends, co-workers, and loved ones can amplify the negativity. The fear that we’re not enough, and we’ll never have enough, is beamed at us 24/7.
Falling into a life dominated by fear, agitation, and dissatisfaction is way too easy.
In fact, those negative influences are deliberately locked into our lives so others can profit from our labor and attention.
But your life doesn’t have to be that way.
Imagine waking up excited about your day. Picture yourself feeling like you’re living the life you’ve actually chosen for yourself instead a life dictated to you by other people or the need to survive.
You can choose to turn away from those negative influences and structure your life in a way that allows you to feel fulfilled and get to projects and goals you truly have been meaning to do.
The secret to consistent motivation isn’t willpower. The secret is to structure your life, so it supports you and your dreams.
But how can you do that when you already have so much to do?
Set yourself up to succeed using ART
What’s ART, and how can ART help you?
ART is an acronym that stands for:
A - Assess your assets, your mistaken beliefs, and the current moment
R - Realign - Realign your thinking and strategy each moment
T - Team up - Surround yourself with the team and tools to succeed
This framework allows you to sustain motivation over time.
Think of building your dream life like building your dream house.
When you want to build something that lasts, you don’t just randomly throw together some nails and wood and hope it all works out.
No, you’d assess what kind of house you wanted, your resources, and where you’d want your house to be.
Once you do that, you may find some things you want may be in conflict. Or you might find that other obstacles mean you need additional resources. So …
You’d re-align your plans.
This is where some give up, but that won’t happen to you because you’ll have the team and tools to help you.
I want to be on your team …
The team part of the ART structure is the most important part. With a team, everything is easier. But I ignored getting help and putting together a team for way too long…
For my whole life, I tried to succeed on my own. I dreamed of writing books and sharing my ideas with the world, but I left a trail of unfinished books, articles, and projects for decades.
The only stuff I finished was for other people.
I worked harder for other people than myself. And I spent decades trying to figure out why.
Slowly, I got people to help me assess my natural strengths and talents, as well as the false beliefs that held me back. I learned to re-align my energy, goals, and resources to suit the moment.
It took decades of going to coaches, therapists, spiritual teachers, 12-step groups, and doctors to figure out what it takes to get things done. But I did it.
I finally learned to finish what I’ve started. And now, I’ve written and published over twenty books. My most popular series, Mom and Christy’s Cozy Mysteries, has delighted readers around the world. As of this writing, the series has over 2,500 five-star ratings on Amazon. My romantic comedy series, the Bronson Billionaires, has over 1,000 5-star ratings.
Recently, because of the T in team, I made two vital discoveries. The first one was that I had untreated, severe sleep apnea. A year later, the second life-changing discovery happened. I was diagnosed with ADHD—at age 51!
No wonder I’d had such a hard time with energy and staying on task. But here’s the amazing thing…
I was able to write all those books BEFORE I got treatment for either of those severe health problems. But with the help of my doctor’s, I’ve been able to get even more things accomplished around diet and health as well.
Since treatment, I’ve lost 17 pounds, and I completed my first half marathon, and I’m still making progress. (I’m want to lose 50 pounds and finish the 2025 LA Marathon.)
All of this to say is that a team and the tools are very important to maintain motivation
